A box that is too small prevents the cat from turning around and burying waste properly, which may lead to litter box avoidance or elimination outside the box. According to AAFP/ISFM guidelines, the box should be at least 1.5 times the cat's body length from nose to tail base.

Can two cats share one litter box?

This is not recommended. Both AAFP and ISFM advise following the N+1 rule — two cats should have at least 3 litter boxes placed in different locations to reduce resource competition and elimination stress.
